After went to Nijo Castle (二条城), it's pretty late for lunch. There was not much choice to have lunch around that around so we just picked a ramen place across the street. Amazingly, the ramen is very good (far better than most of the ramen places in Los Angeles).

This is the first time I've had homemade ramen, and it was delicious. The chef made enough for 25 bowls. The soup was tonkotsu, deep flavor but not too oily (Ippudo is good but it's a heavy broth). Very simple taste, I ate two bowls but could have probably eaten a couple more because the soup doesn't really weigh you down much. Everything was homemade. He said that the soup took 3 days to make, in 8 hour shifts. The noodles took 4 hours and were the most difficult because unlike the soup base which can be left alone to simmer, the noodles need constant attention while you're making them.

I like noodle. Japanese ramen is very different from those in Malaysia (like shrimp noodle, chicken noodle, wonton noodle). I can't say ramen is better than Malaysian noodles but they are side by side (which mean I like both of them).

Do Japanese eat spicy food? Tukemenn is one of those foods that Hiroshima is proud to claim to be hers. People from outside Hiroshima hardly know this. The cold ramen noodle with cabbage and negi is dipped in the spicy sauce. This is delicious and is one of my best here. It burns your lips, tongue and the whole of gut. This might be one of the hottest food of Japan. You can choose spice level from mild to very hot. There are few established chains of Tsukemen. I could eat Spice level 11 at Toshi and which was very hot. I want to try more. :) This one is from Toshi (とし) at Nagarekawa.

食い倒れゴールデンウィーク。 もちろん、地元徳島ラーメンも。 照明の光でてかったり、 ホワイトバランスがうまくとれてなかったりと ちょっと写真うつりが悪いけど、 麺がのびる前に食べなくては〜、と サッサとカメラを箸に持ち変える。 美味しかったです。

On and on we wandered till we begun to hear frightening growls that seemed to be right on top of us! It ended up being only our stomachs, which we fed with the first bowl of tempura soba we could find. I still think this was one of K's favorite meals in Japan. Mine too.

しばらく食べ過ぎが続いていたので、今日のランチは蒟蒻ラーメン。先日いただいた山菜のうち、残しておいたコシアブラを入れました。手前がカレー味、向こうは味噌味。コシアブラ、適度に苦みがあって口の中が爽やかになります。

I was driving and I found out that there was a festival on Sunday in Japantown in SJ. Don't eat at the "Ramen House" --it tastes like crap and they're so cheap! Note: No, I do not know who that family is --I am NOT related to them! They just happen to be in the photo at that moment. LOL.
